“Guest at the Cabin”

June 23rd, 2012

A story published in Cottage Magazine titled Guest at the Cabin, written by Jane Cassie talks about cottage etiquette for visitors.

As a guest at a cottage when gathering with family, friends and connecting with nature be sure to follow some simple etiquette and rules to ensure your invite for next year.

  • “Eliminate the electronics”  Enjoy a CD and leisurely read instead of cell phones and TV’s.
  • “Instead of designer duds bring a pair of overalls, comfy sweats and gardening gloves”
  • Don’t overstay your welcome “Guest like fish begin to smell after 3 days”
  • Offer to help with household duties and projects; a hostess will always welcome help when and if it is needed.
  • “Bring your share of grub” At most cottages B.Y.O.B is a must, everyone loves to eat and drink on weekend getaways
  • A token gift of Thanks is always appreciated.
  • When asked “how did you sleep” always answer “fine thanks” chances are your cottage cot is not the feather bed at the Hilton.
  • Whether they are party people or sleepy heads, size up the situation and go with the flow.
  • Be a gracious guest and turn that frown upside down.
  • No one likes a massive mess, keep tidy.
  • Be a camp champ who loves everything from weed whacking to jig sawing.
  • When bunking with your significant other remember that the cottage is full of other guests, so be careful not to over share your evening.

Recreational Property Sales Gain Traction in 2012

June 22nd, 2012

Recent articles in The Vancouver Sun and the Times Colonist conclude that although some purchasers are still cautious about acquiring recreational property, a combination of lower prices and an upturn in market conditions, including lower interest rates and new rebates have placed families in the driver’s seat. Furthermore, with the pent-up demand building since the financial crisis 2008, purchasers are powering a large increase in cottage sales across the country.

There is a renewed post-recession interest in B.C.’s recreational property market and it’s largely from young families attracted by lower prices. According to a recent report, RE/MAX Recreational Property Report 2012, prices are not only down from 2009 but also generally down from 2011.  Here at The Cottages at Cultus Lake our 2012 prices are the best we have seen since launching in 2007, starting at $334,900!  We are seeing more confidence in those looking to purchase a family cottage this summer, and the success of sales this early on in the season is a true reflection of that.

The report also researched trends in 33 markets in 10 provinces.  In looking at British Columbia independently, the report concluded that although properties at Cultus Lake have slightly softened in 2012, their rise from $450,000 in 2009 to $800,000 to $1 million in 2011 proves the strength and stable values of the Cultus Lake recreational real estate market when comparing it to others in the province.

A deeper look at the Cultus Lake also reveals a number of differences in market values, respectful to the different areas.  The most significant factor supporting a steady increase of values here at The Cottages is the title of freehold land ownership, not to mention brand new quality construction and infrastructure as well as endless on-site amenities .

Clean and Clear and Mmmmm so Good

May 31st, 2012

We are commonly asked where The Cottage at Cultus Lake gets its drinking water from?  Because its an interesting topic that fascinates most we’d like to share the answer with everybody.

Our drinking water comes from an extensive aquifer below the central part of the Columbia Valley, which extends from Cultus Lake to beyond the Canada/U.S. border, stretching 8.7 km2.  It is at least 50 m in thickness and about 1000 m in width and is approximately 110 feet below the earth’s surface.

Known as The Columbia Valley Aquifer, it has been studied by a number agencies, more recently by the Ministry of Environment which has characterized the aquifer as a large, deep, fast moving body of water with good drainage in the Columbia Valley region holding an estimated 130.5 billion litres of groundwater! It is primarily recharged from rainfall and snow melt as well as water from springs, creeks and streams which add approximately 26 billion litres of water into the aquifer each year.

What is most fascinating is the amount of groundwater withdrawal, which is estimated at only 0.15 billion litres/year.  In summary, the aquifer is used very little by residents; only 0.6% of the actual water is used

A unique water distribution system has been designed specifically for The Cottage community.  Groundwater from the aquifer is collected in a holding reservoir and gravity fed to the community when needed.   The water is not chlorinated, and therefore, we enjoy clean and clear drinking water that tastes amazing!  Come out and see for yourself – have a glass on us.
